Post-construction cleaning, often called builders cleaning, is the detailed clean between the end of building work and the use of a finished space. A good result depends on timing, surface protection and an agreed scope—not simply making a dusty room look tidy.
Plan the clean around the building programme
Before booking, confirm which trades are finished and whether more cutting, sanding or painting is planned. A final clean can be quickly undone by follow-on work. Decide whether the project needs a staged clean, a final presentation clean or a return visit after defects are addressed. Make access, water, power and waste arrangements clear.
Assess dust and hazards first
Construction dust is not always ordinary household dust. Work involving concrete, mortar or stone can create respirable crystalline silica. Do not dry sweep hazardous dust or use a domestic vacuum as a substitute for properly selected controls. The site must be assessed and suitable equipment and methods chosen before cleaning begins. Protect new finishes
Newly installed glass, stone, timber, tapware and painted surfaces can be damaged by unsuitable chemicals or abrasive tools. Ask for care instructions and confirm any curing times with the installer. Identify existing scratches or marks before work starts. Adhesive, grout and paint residue need an assessed, material-specific method; aggressive scraping is not a universal solution.
Use a written room checklist
For each room, agree which reachable surfaces, cupboards, shelves, fixtures, glass, tracks and floors are included. Distinguish presentation cleaning from removing construction waste or correcting defects. Work methodically through the agreed areas, keeping cleaned zones protected from ongoing work. Floors are usually finished after higher surfaces, once the relevant dust controls are in place.
Inspect before handover
Check the finished space in good light. Look at edges and tracks as well as the main visible surfaces. Record remaining marks, access restrictions and damage separately from cleaning tasks. A final walkthrough with the client or site contact helps distinguish an incomplete clean from an item that needs attention by a trade.
What to send when requesting a builders clean
